Why Your Scraps Matter More Than You Think

It’s easy to overlook what happens after we throw something away. A half-eaten meal, coffee grounds, or produce scraps often end up in the trash without a second thought. But once they reach a landfill, those materials don’t break down the way we might expect. Instead, they sit for years, sometimes decades, contributing to emissions that negatively impact our environment. At Dakota Prairie Composting (DPC), we see those same scraps differently. To us, they’re a resource with real value.

Here’s how commercial composting is helping turn everyday waste into something meaningful for our soil, our communities, and the future.

1. A NATURAL SECOND LIFE

Many of us appreciate finding new uses for old things: repairing, reusing, or repurposing when we can. Composting follows that same idea, just on a natural scale.

Organic materials like food scraps and yard waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost, often called “black gold.” Instead of being lost in a landfill, these materials are returned to the earth, supporting local agriculture, gardens, and native landscapes. It’s a simple shift that creates a lasting impact.

2. HANDLING WHAT OTHERS CAN’T

Composting at home is a great step, but it comes with limitations. Certain items, like meat, dairy, and compostable packaging, are often left out of backyard systems. At our facility, we use a high-heat composting process that allows us to safely break down a wider range of materials:

  • Food scraps, including meat and dairy
  • BPI-certified compostable products
  • Other organic materials not suited for home composting

Our system reaches temperatures high enough (140-160 degrees Fahrenheit) to efficiently and responsibly manage these items, ensuring they fully decompose rather than sit unused.

3. SIMPLE FOR YOU, MEANINGFUL FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

We understand that daily life is busy. Composting shouldn’t feel like another complicated task. With commercial composting, the process is straightforward:

  1. Sign up for the free Household Organics Recycling Program
  2. Separate your organic waste
  3. Place it in the appropriate container
  4. Bring it to DPC
  5. We take care of the rest

Behind the scenes, our team manages the composting process from start to finish. It’s an easy way to make a measurable difference without adding extra work to your day.

4. REDUCING WASTE, SUPPORTING COMMUNITY

When organic waste goes to a landfill, it contributes to methane emissions (one of the more potent greenhouse gases). Composting offers a better path forward by keeping these materials out of landfills and putting them to good use instead. By choosing composting, you’re helping to:

  • Reduce environmental impact
  • Improve soil health
  • Support local and regional sustainability efforts

This work stays close to home, benefiting the same communities where the waste is generated.

BE PART OF THE CYCLE

Composting is about renewal. Let’s rethink what we throw away and put it back to work where it matters most.
