Editor’s Note: This article was originally published before Dakota Prairie Composting adopted its current name and was operating as the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility.
This fall, Dakota Prairie Composting will begin its transition to its new facility. The transition will happen in phases over the next year as staff begin clearing out the existing site. The first step in this process is to limit acceptance of additional materials at the current location. One effect of this will be the discontinuation of the Free Yard Waste Drop-Off Program, normally held on Sundays in September, October, April, and May.
Yard waste drop-offs will still be accepted at the facility during their normal business hours (Monday- Saturday) for a small fee. Residents can expect to pay between $10-$25 per load, depending on load size. Hours at the current location are Monday-Thursday, 7am-7pm; Friday, 7am – 5pm; and Saturday, 8am – 2pm.
Residents can continue to drop off material at the current location through the end of this year. The SMSC’s new facility, Dakota Prairie Composting, plans on having its grand opening this upcoming spring. In the meantime, be on the lookout for the facility’s Free Pumpkin Drop-Off Program and Free Christmas Tree Drop-Off Program, which will both continue to be hosted at the current Organics Recycling Facility location for 2024.
